Here we go. (A Welcome of Sorts)

For as long as there has been art, there has been the critic. Whether it's an onlooker, a less-talented peer, a rival, a superior, or even the artist himself (or herself), art has always thrived under the lens of scrutiny and critique. I say "thrived" because nothing is healthier for an artist than to consider the opinions and suggestions of others. An artist that lives in a bubble is an artist who refuses to acknowledge flaws, or even to accept praise. That's something that people often forget; critiquing is equal parts praise as it is derision.

That's not to say that an artist must forever serve it's critics. In fact, a quick look at the art world will show that most artists spit in the face of critics and disown those who pander to the masses. This is most evident in the music world.

So, then, who is the critic for? If the artist will listen yet still hold the critic in contempt, what purpose does the critique serve in this day and age, when artists continuously go against the grain if only on principle? I feel that the critic is here to serve the people out to enjoy and understand the art around them.

In this case, that art is music--music of any kind we can get our hands on (though this will inevitably be mostly popular music). In reaction to derailed reviewers such as Rolling Stone Magazine, we hope to provide a blog that functions as a database of sorts. Here, we aim to compile a backlog of informative and insightful reviews from multiple reviewers. Unlike most other reviewing outlets, we will be providing and encouraging reviews of similar recordings from multiple reviewers to get the most opinions possible. Nothing's worse than a terrible off-base review from a writer who has no idea what he or she is talking about (coughRollingStonecough).

I understand that there are a whole slew of other websites and independent blogs that review music, but I hope to differentiate this one by making it a resource for music fans young and old to discover more music new and old. Make it informative, make it insightful, make it helpful, and most of all, make it matter. We don't want to have shortsighted reviews that completely underrate modern masterpieces and disrespect timeless classics.

And with that, enjoy and don't be afraid to share your opinions!

  1. I expect this blog to be much more interesting and creative than the rest simply because it is Richard and Garreth
